What happens when the soul of an arrogant genius doctor possess a silver-spooned resident doctor who’s good in theory but clumsy in practice, to perform surgeries together?
Chaos and hilarity ensue.
“Ghost Doctor” is a fantasy medical drama infused with supernatural, comedic and fun elements, heightened by the oozing Bromance chemistry between Rain and Kim Bum.
What is so bewitching about it that viewers are hoping for a Season 2 then?
The well-paced drama surprised us with its refreshing and exciting twists from time to time and endearing character developments that bestowed us valuable life lessons and allow us to see things from various perspectives, even as early as from Episode 1.
It’s a well-rounded product that encompasses laughter, hilarity, heartwarming and poignant moments, looking at the multiple facets of human nature – be it the good, bad or ugly.
Love, empathy, selflessness, dreams, aspirations, greed, importance of family, conspiracies, regrets in life, etc, manifest in different ways.
Creativity comes into play when we could see and think from the perspectives of the comatose spirits, as well as getting part of their life stories revealed to us.
Viewers may wonder if these roles were merely for slapstick comedy effects and would fade into the background, but every role, including the small ones, has a story to tell..
One learning point is that, every life is precious and everyone has an untold story waiting to be unfolded.
This drama’s easily “digestible” and allows you to unwind after a long day.
It’s light-hearted, fun and entertaining to watch, with its heartwarming moments, but also sent your heart cringing at times when it’s too late for regrets.
Little did we know that we would be captivated with interesting plot development and consistent flow of fun and hilarious synergy between the characters.
As with life, this drama gave us some wonderful moments, but also poignant ones. The regrets and words left unspoken, and the things that could have been done.
The warmth lingered in my heart even till after the ending credits rolled.
I like this drama for the Bromance, wise and meaningful words from Tess, the interaction between our 2 doctors and comatose spirits, which unravel the stories behind.
It probably provided us with an imaginary fantasy avenue, because there would be times when we wished we have another chance to speak our minds to the loved ones who have gone. You would have pondered over the words you wanted to say if you had that one chance.
“Comforting” is a more apt word than “healing” to describe how it made us feel. “Ghost Doctor” consoled a part of us, that’s otherwise irreparable.
While the BROMANCE factor outshines everything else (loveline being negligible), it is the chemistry between the “spirits”, Seung Tat who can see and communicate with them and Cha Young Min who could finally see and feel from his patients’ perspectives, that gripped our hearts.
Suspense and excitement unfolds with every episode. There were heartbreaking moments when it was too late for loved ones to wish to convey their feelings for one another.
There’s this mentorship theme from one generation to another, that’s inherent in the drama.
This ghost-human tag team are polar opposites in terms of background, personalities, skills and take on life, but as they learn how to cooperate and help out one another and their patients, they complemented each other’s shortcomings. In the process, they realised their resolute in saving every patient’s life, developed into doctors with empathy and also emerge as better persons.
What can be better?
As with all KDrama plots, there’s some clichéd portion that “Ghost Doctor” can’t rid off entirely. One can visualise the typical plot of a learning journey for these doctors to become better persons, and how this ghost-human tag team and their alliances would try to stop the evil upper class who schemes to seize ownership of the hospital.
The ghosts are not scary at all and the drama isn’t draggy for most of the time. The only thing that would bore you a little would be Young Min and Se Jin’s more “melodramatic” love line.
Lessons Learnt
– Everyone has their own struggles and a side/story that’s unknown to others.
I always believe in being kind, because everyone has struggles that we do not know of.
Even someone born with a silver spoon like Seung Tat, who’s just waiting to take over his grandfather’s hospital, has experienced tragedies and trauma that is unknown to most.
Ever since his father’s unfortunate demise while trying to save him from drowning, he has been guilt-stricken. The seemingly aloof surface was a facade to hide his fears, scars and traumas. Because of his ability to see ghosts, he just couldn’t bring himself to operate on dying patients.
Only Tess knew what Seung Tat was going through.
Likewise, most coworkers would see Young Min as a successful doctor but cold-blooded and lacking EQ. He had gone through many ordeals that shaped these changes.
It’s important to take the time and effort to understand someone, before passing judgement. Our perceptions may be proven wrong.
– We will never be able to see from another person’s perspective until we are put into a similar situations.
Young Min used to segregate his patients into to 2 categories, those that he could save and those that no one else could save. It was only when he also became a comatose ghost, then was he able to 将心比心 and understand how his patients truly felt.
The exasperation when no one else could feel or hear you and being left to face your fate while being strapped to the life support system.
Regardless of your social status, everyone deserves an equal chance to live.
– There’s a reason why we get acquainted with the people we meet.
Everyone we meet in our lives is here to teach us some life lessons, overcome obstacles or our shortcomings, so that we can emerge as a better Version 2.0.
This is inherent in why Tess possessed Young Min during his internship days to help save lives, and now Young Min possessing Seung Tat to do the same.
There’s also an affinity (渊源) between Tess and Seung Tat. It all ended where it started, at full circle. He is a life saviour, mentor and a fatherly figure to Seung Tat, who was there to guide and protect him.
– Do not forget your humble beginnings/莫忘初衷
While we are all guilty of the fact that we become complacent after being well-versed in a certain job function for years and may gradually lose the passion, it is important to always remember WHY we started it all.
Young Min’s passion for saving lives were re-ignited only after he was dealt with a big blow and had to face his new reality.
– There’s a coexistent law in the living and supernatural world.
There’s a 定律 in the drama that ensures one will forget all the happenings while you were a spirit, when you wake up from a coma one day.
Is that similar to the reincarnation concept?
“胜卓，从昏迷中苏醒过来，你知道为什么会失忆吗? 自己变成鬼怪四处飘荡的事。若是醒来后仍旧记得，就活不下去了。连当事人都是如此，若是让活人知道呢? 我明明已经记不得了，只有那个人记得怎么办? 就像你说的，如果我死了，我自己都承受不了的事，要那个人自己如何承受? 只有当事人和活人都不知道，这世界才会按照顺利运行。活人的世界，也是有自己的规则的。”
It will be too tormenting for the person to hold on to memories as a spirit and see how people around them treats them behind their backs, or it may be too much for them to take.
Rather than not being able to live a new leash of life, it’s better that you don’t recall unhappy memories, to maintain an “order” and “balance” in the living world.
– Life and death is beyond us. Cherish the time and moments we have.
Exercising control on how we wish to lead our lives is within our means, but manipulating life and death, or even knowing when the time comes, is definitely beyond us. Tomorrow is never guaranteed for anyone.
We all know this principle, yet the loafing nature inherent in humans would constantly cause us to delay our plans, just because we thought that it would be 来日方长.
You’ll never know if an accident or tomorrow would come first. Therefore, if you miss or wish to meet someone, just let them know.
– Pursue your dreams while you are still able to
It is only when we lose the freedom and ability to do whatever we wish, then would we regret not cherishing the time we used to have.
This is illustrated by how the comatose ghosts trio’s been wanting Seung Tat to help them fulfill wishes as simple as borrowing a book from the library, renting a movie DVD or buying walnut cookies.
While these wishes may seem small, they literally symbolize the “bigger” things that they would have accomplished if they were still well and able.
We can identify a piece of ourselves in the coma ghost characters. We are afraid that we are unable to live up to our parents’ expectations. In order not to disappoint them, we try to do whatever they wish, which may mean giving up on your aspirations. Should something happen to us, we would also not wish to become a burden to our families.
Bo Mi was preparing for her PhD studies before she went into a coma, while Hun Gil was an aspiring rookie actor and Guk Chan, the owner of a shop that sells popular walnut cookies.
After she regained consciousness, Bo Mi decided she should live the life she wants and not what others want. It’s alright not to be as accomplished as her peers, but to have more personal time to do what she loves.
Hun Gil may not have a smooth sailing life but he could at least still have a go at realising his dreams after he wakes up.
It is more unfortunate for Guk Chan who will never get a chance to make things right again. He would be in a comatose state till he’s taken off the life support system someday.
– Communication is of the essence. It is always best that we try to say whatever we truly feel while we can.
“口是心非“和懒得解释清楚，都是成年人的惯病。
Be it Young Min or Seung Tat, they did not find it necessary to explain the reasons behind what they did or were intending to do. For the sake of saving grace, they acted like they didn’t care at all.
It doesn’t take much to understand that it is always best that we try to put forth whatever we truly wish to say, but it takes much more effort to be able to say the words out.
Two-way communication is important in any interpersonal relationship. We cannot assume that others would be able to understand what we are thinking.
– Mentorship, 传承 from Tess to Young Min, Young Min to Seung Tak
The art of Mentorship is being reinforced throughout the drama.
Tess possessed Young Min during his intern days to save lives during emergencies, which inspired him to work harder to become a successful doctor, so that the spirits wouldn’t possess him again.Young Min had to possess Seung Tak in order to perform high-risk surgeries since Seung Tak was totally clueless and afraid to take on the scalpel.
As Seung Tak finds the motivation in saving lives, Young Min tried to coach him. One trying to learn the ropes, while the other re-igniting his passion through this mentoring process.
Both learnt that it is just as important to have the passion, empathy and heart in saving lives, other than just mere medical skills. They complement each other and handled challenging situations together.
Tess was always there for them, providing guidance and support as they moved through the hurdles. It was till they were both mature enough to take on the challenges, that Tess decided to retire from his role as a guardian angel.
Ahn Tae Hyun used to be Young Min’s most capable disciple, however he embarked on the wrong route while trying to become successful faster. Tess almost became Chief of Cardiothoracic Department’s mentor, if he had not passed away suddenly.
Since they weren’t able to have their “disciples” take over them, the scriptwriter had arranged Seung Tat and Young Min to replace the mentees respectively.
– Bidding farewell to the past and welcoming new beginnings
Tess decided that it was high time for him to leave after 20 years as he witnessed how both Seung Tat and Young Min became better doctors, while he managed to spend some precious family time with Soo Jung.
所谓“长江后浪推前浪“，it was a handing over and retirement process where he passed the baton over to the young ones. As he always reminded, you should not interfere and leave the living to deal with their matters.
Sad Moments
Kinship forms the backbone of the story.
Much as we do not wish to come to terms with, or no matter how we have prepared ourselves, you would still grapple to struggle when the time comes.
No one can ever learn how to deal with bidding farewell to their loved ones.
– Chairman Jang’s last game of chess and a “lesson” to his son, plus “compensation” to Se Jin
It’s a torment to keep a dying patient alive against his will.
What’s more torturing would be to see how the son erred to the point of no return for his inheritance. While he felt sorry to have Se Jin being the one to declare his death, but that’s her job as a doctor and he wouldn’t have trusted anyone more than her.
Tess’s game of chess with Chairman Jang taught us some life lessons too. He didn’t apprehend why Tess would not let him win his last game of chess.
Tess: 玩的局面上哪有什么输赢? 人的一生也一样。没输也没赢的，这才是活得很好的人生啊。
One shouldn’t be overly adamant about winning or losing in life. It’s all about whether you have led a life which you didn’t win or lose much, yet remained happy.
– Comatose ghost leaving Eunsang Foundation Hospital so that he could be nearer to his family
Not all patients’ families have enough financial resources to keep their sick family members warded indefinitely. Many would have to go through the arduous process of trying hard to make ends meet just to keep them alive, but at the same time, too weary to visit them over them.
Having lost their pillar and sole breadwinner overnight, it would be tough for Guk Chan’s wife to keep the business going while taking care of a young child. It’s a tug-of-war when you can’t bear to watch your loved ones suffer, yet keeping them alive would mean having to go through much hardships, which would build up resentment over time.
He didn’t wish to be the only one left wandering in the hospital when all his “friends” move back to their respective lives, and more so, he hoped to spend more time with his family.
While it may be a matter of time Guk Chan’s family couldn’t sustain his medical bills anymore, it was thoughtful of him to request the doctors to help him move to a neighbourhood hospital instead. It would be more convenient for his family and reduce time from running to and fro the hospital.
So many things left unsaid and how guilty he feels towards his family members who have to bear the hefty medical expenses and slog to sustain a failing business. He was touched by Seung Tat’s gesture who passed the secret recipe to Guk Chan’s wife and also reminded them to visit Guk Chan whenever they could.
– Tess’s farewell to his family
Behind the front of a caring and responsible surgeon, lies a guilt-stricken father-in-law and grandfather to Soo Jung’s family.
They were the main people that Tess could not let go and felt that he needed to make amendments.
The parting scene where he passed the super belated birthday cake to Soo Jung and saying all the heartfelt words about how well she has grown etc, brought tears to my eyes.
It was the very moment that Soo Jung realised the weird Ajumma who came to strike conversations with her, was her beloved grandfather. He was unable to celebrate Soo Jung’s birthdays as he was often caught up with surgeries, even till the moment he passed away.
It was his way of making amends by watching her grow as an intern doctor, provide advice and support as the “cleaner lady” when she needs some perk-me-ups.
Tess went to have a new hairdo done by his daughter-in-law for the very first and last time. He tried to talk her round into accepting Soo Jung’s choice to join the A&E or Cardiothoracic Department.
真的是用心良苦和苦口婆心啊。长辈们的爱和默默付出，真的是让人为之动容。
Our loved ones are always around us, just in different forms.
– Tess and Seung Tat’s farewell, rounding up the story in full circle.
One of the saddest moments is when Seung Tat waved and bade farewell to Tess, his life saviour, mentor, who has been like an elder/fatherly figure to him.
This was a poignant moment but all good things had to come to an end.
Having watched Seung Tat grow up after saving his life, Tess knew that he required a lot of care and attention, to move past his childhood traumas, forgive himself and find the real meaning in life and being a doctor.
It ended up in full circle when Seung Tat has was able to put behind his past traumas, grown independent and matured enough to face the future on his own.
Tess has accomplished all he wanted to this lifetime, and can move on to the next dimension, wherever he would be. It’s time for him to take a rest after working so hard all his life and putting everyone else before him.
Cha Young Min, the Arrogant Genius Doctor
Rain’s choice of medical fantasy comedy as a drama genre for his return to the small screen after 3 years, proved to be a right move.
“Ghost Doctor” has been popular through the course of its run and the pairing of Rain and Kim Bum totally overrides their romance lovelines.
Young Min is a genius doctor who’s the ace in the Cardiothorarcic Surgery Department, but he’s arrogant, mercenary, cold and hostile.
所谓“高处不胜寒“，the invisible wall that he deliberately placed between him and others has made him super unpopular. He has no family and friends, just a pet hamster.
After Se Jin left him, all he knew was to work for the sake of money, but most didn’t realise that it was to obtain funding for patients‘ families who have financial difficulties to pay for the long-term hospital bills.
It seemed rather unfeeling that he would segregate his patients into those that he could save and those that he assumed no other doctor could save since he couldn’t do it as well.
He was so full of himself but proven wrong later, when he realised that there were areas that the team had missed out previously, which cause the patients to be in a coma longer than they should.
It is only towards the end that it was revealed he would have conducted countless checks and done a lot of research before declaring his patients as “hopeless”.
The universe has its way of allowing us to learn life lessons in different ways.
他曾经无视他人生命和人生的重要性。
If not because he became a comatose spirit, he would never have put himself in the shoes of others and attempt to understand their feelings.
The comatose spirits played an important role in softening his edges and understanding how precious each life is.
Deep beneath the selfish front, lies a passionate doctor who has his patients at heart.
It was Tess and Seung Tat who played paramount roles as his mentor and disciple that transformed him from a cold-hearted doctor who chooses his patients, to one who has his patients’ lives and health on his mind, wanting to save as many patients as he could..
Go Seung Tat, the Happy-go-lucky “Smelly Hands”
There’s this allure about Kim Bum as the “国民弟弟” in any drama with the “Bromance” element.
He excelled in his role as Lee Rang, Lee Dong Wook’s mischievous Gumiho dongsaeng in “Tale of the Nine-Tailed”, where you could not hate him for his evil doings but empathise with him for the lack of family love.
We adored Lee Rang, but love Seung Tat too.
Much research and preparations were done prior to filming, since Kim Bum had to enact not just his main character as Seung Tat, but also the mannerism, tones and body language that Young Min has after possessing Seung Tat. This entails observing his co-star off screen. He improvised actions on how it would seem like the before-and-after of being possessed.
Kudos to Kim Bum for his efforts and ability to cultivate such good chemistry with his co-stars.
It’s challenging for Kim Bum to take on a 2-in-1 role, since his mannerism, gestures, tones and the way he looks at his co-stars require tweaking, based on him being Seung Tat or Cha Young Min. He has to take on the “sufferings” for both characters as well.
Go Seung Tat is a genius who’s an expert in his medical theories, but clumsy with his practical sessions.
He is seemingly lazy and loves spending his days goofing around, since he was slated to take over his grandpa’s hospital in time to come.
Born with a silver spoon and an ostensibly happy-go-lucky guy, he doesn’t seem to bother much about what’s happening in the world around him.
He attempted to hide a tragic past beneath his cheeky facade. The seemingly aloof surface was a facade to hide his fears, scars and traumas.
Because of his ability to see ghosts, he just couldn’t bring himself to operate on dying patients. His best way out was through avoidance, but he would still need to face up with his problems someday.
Soo Jung was his “only” friend who would be direct and chide him regardless of his status, while Jae Won was his “brother” at work, always ready to lend him a helping hand.
When Kim Bum is Seung Tat, we would see the iconic “Hi-5” gestures as he says “Hello” and how he would address Jae Won as “Brother” in English.
When Young Min takes over Seung Tat’s body, he would look and sound more solemn, addresses others by their names, and transforms into someone who could handle any high-level difficulty operations that even the seniors are not confident to take up. He would rotate his wrist and flex his fingers before performing surgeries.
After Seung Tat regains his consciousness from being possessed, he would often shudder with his fists up and look all around him in fear.
These are obvious signs that allow viewers to differentiate Seung Tat from Young Min readily.
No one knew the pain he was going through, except Tess of course.
He hopes to save every patient’s life and cannot accept anyone else dying before him, ever since the tragic incident.
“A doctor can wait for a patient, but a patient never waits for a doctor.” was his stance in saving patients at the earliest possible.
He has a caring and considerate nature, who priotises saving lives, regardless of their social status or whether there is more chance of survival.
He daren’t become close to anyone else or meddle in others’ issues, except helping out Young Min as he was the only one who would see him.
This is something that Seung Tat managed to revive in Young Min’s subconscious.
He initially disliked the idea of being possessed to perform operations but over time, it helped to heighten his confidence and found that he’s “useful” instead of being so accident-prone and no longer a blunder in the Operating Theatre.
From a “smelly hand” to a “golden hand”, he enjoyed the joys of saving lives and receiving compliments. Over time, he let the “complacency” and joy of having successful operations and patients recovering get to him. It wasn’t done through his own means but through the hands of someone else in his body.
That’s when Young Min finally lost it and released his pent-up frustrations of not being visible to others. No one knew that he was the one who performed the operations instead.
While they lashed out at each other, they began to understand the other’s viewpoints and learnt to be more mindful of others’ feelings, as well as validating their own.
It was plain hilarious when Se Jin and Soo Jung were vying for his attention and tried to “snatch” him during the last few episodes though.
Imagine how tired Kim Bum would be acting like Young Min when he was with Se Jin but back to being Seung Tat when being with Soo Jung.
Tess, the Guardian Angel
Tess is better known as the guardian angel of Eunsang Foundation Hospital and heart (灵魂人物 ) of the drama.
He’s the “connecting point” between all the characters, interacting with most of them and he switches between serious and playful, or funny modes very quickly.
To have Veteran actor Sung Dong Il assimilating this role was a good choice, since he has a good sense of humour, but being able to “ground” you with his wise quotes concurrently.
Being a guardian of the living and supernatural realm in the hospital, he tries his best to coach, guide and support his juniors, while reassuring the comatose ghosts so that they could “adjust” to their new identities.
We get many thought-provoking and wise life philosophies from Tess, that not just helped our leads re-ignite their passion for work, but also sent us reflecting about our priorities in life.
Although Tess has passed away for 2 decades, his granddaughter, old pal and disciple still miss him. You are still alive as long as you live in the hearts of those who remember you.
Seung Tat’s grandfather was his old pal and Chief of Cardiothoracic almost became his disciple. Would Chief become a real successful surgeon if he had more time to understudy Tess back then?
We can never get everything we wish for in life, but just got to face up to what life deals us with.
He sacrificed for saving others lives but neglected his own quality of life and family. Glad he managed to spend some family moments with his daughter-in-law and granddaughter too. These family time were much missed out when he was alive and busy saving others lives.
Even if he’s not visible to them, Soo Jung could feel his presence.
Being the only one who could still see him, Seung Tat was able to bid farewell to his saviour as he moved on to accomplish different things in another realm.
Their 交集 ended right at where it all started. Things came to a full cycle.
Such is life.
Bromance
The main selling point of this medical fantasy drama is undeniably the oozing Bromance and explosive chemistry between Rain and Kim Bum!
It’s a magnetic pull towards this duo with clashing personalities yet complement so well to tickle your laughing spot.
It was more than just a personal growth story for this duo, whereby Young Min rediscovered his passion for not just saving lives, but also respecting every patient’s life and story, while Seung Tat overcoming his traumas and learning the ropes to be a skillful and compassionate doctor.
They couldn’t see eye-to-eye and started off with major collisions and disagreements.
It’s not just the personality differences, but also their values systems. As with all other couples, there was 磨合期/ adjustment period and a steep learning curve to embrace differences and see things from various perspectives.
No matter how vast their differences are, there was something that they share in common that binds them together.
There must be a reason why their lives were intertwined. It was their resolute in saving as many lives as they could, that bonded them so intensely.
Tess was both their mentor, who aided them along their learning journey.
They learned the importance of finding a common goal for their collaboration, work together to realise and overcome their respective shortcomings.
One would chuckle at the scenes when Seung Tat kept touching Young Min as he complained of the lack of SKINSHIP in their Bromance.
It was Young Min who tried means to “stick” to Seung Tat while he was in comatose, but Seung Tat found it fascinating that he could actually touch Young Min when he finally woke up.
Romance
Romance seems to take a backseat but you would love the 2 budding love lines between the coma ghosts and between Seung Tat and Soo Jung. The loveline between Young Min and Se Jin is a little boring though, since it treads on the “melodrama” line. However, Young Min managed to understand why Se Jin left without a word and all the struggles she had been through.
Se Jin is a steadfast lover who never gives up on Young Min despite how cold he was towards her. She would expend all her resources and explore various treatment plans.
Through possessing Seung Tat and getting Seung Tat to do things for Se Jin, were some ways in which Young Min could spend lone time with her.
Though it created some confusion for Se Jin, we are glad it didn’t turn into a complicated love rectangle.
This is when the ex-lovers got to rekindle their romance and spent more time with one another.
Seung Tat and Soo Jung were more like a bickering pair of friends, who have yet confessed their feelings to each other.
“友达以上，恋人未满“正是最好的暧昧时期。
Can’t classify them as being in an “ambiguous” relationship yet, but we can see pink bubbles popping around them.
Seung Tat loves to disturb Soo Jung and cracks jokes to cheer her up, while Soo Jung would often knock some sense into him, to stop fooling around but takes his role as a doctor seriously.
Being more observant than her peers, she was able to see through the masquerade that Seung Tat put on to conceal a part of him that was utterly broken and shattered.
Not surprising that she could sense it was Professor Cha taking over Seung Tat’s body at times, as she realised the body language, mannerism that both usually portray, were poles apart.
Wish that we could see more of this pair’s advancements in future as a potential “rival” appears to thwart Seung Tat’s plans to win Soo Jung’s heart.
It was rather comical to watch the 2 ladies getting all jealous and fought over the guys though, with Soo Jung not wanting Young Min to possess Seung Tat and have him getting into accidents, while Se Jin wanting Seung Tat to eat more chicken dishes that Young Min loves (but Seung Tat is allergic to).
Hun Gil and Bo Mi’s budding romance leaves us much space to imagine how things would unfold for them as they meet each other again after waking from their coma. While you may not remember the incidents when you were wandering spirits, there’s always an inkling in their hearts that show their connection.

All in all, we loved this drama not just for the humour, heartening bromance and chemistry, but also the life lessons instilled in us.
