No matter how time passes, a romantic comedy (“rom-com”) remains as one of the long-withstanding favourite drama genres. There is a little girl who lives in many women’s hearts. She still believes in fairytales, and is secretly hoping that a prince charming would take her away someday.

Even when the drama has the most clichéd (almost predictable) story line about a narcissistic chaebol falling for his capable, beautiful secretary (with the loveliest smile), it would still become an instant hit. “Rich Guy vs Ordinary Girl” may be an extremely old-fashioned plot, but as long as it resonates well with the general public, who cares?

What makes this web-toon turned drama so swoon-worthy and being able to acclaim 5 to 10% viewership ratings on average?

The fundamental requirements include not only having good looking & popular leads, endearing moments, kiss scenes, funny elements, the most important would be chemistry between the leads and how supporting roles would add on to the FUN on set.

Other than an almost perfect chaebol (who’s rich, intelligent, successful, good-looking, except being dense), the gorgeous and capable secretary, there is a considerable amount of effort put into creating the latest office fashion trend.

Park Min Young is a trendsetter and a fashion icon among young ladies. Whatever she donned in the drama garnered much attention, ranging from office shirts (Common Unique, avouavou, Sezwick, Jill Stuart), knee length skirts, handbags from Sandro, Jimmy Choo, Joy Gryson, Chloe, Mulberry, Fendi, Valextra &Loewe, to her dangling earrings. My favourites were her off shoulder dress and cold-shoulder floral dress from “Not Your Rose”.

Much as I love romantic comedies, “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” failed to make me fall head over heels, because it lacked depth in the following ways:
– Not enough depth to the respective love lines or family relationships
– Weak character build-up for supporting roles, especially disappointed in how they portrayed Lee Tae Hwan as Sung Yeon
– There wasn’t much takeaway from the love triangle

It may not be Park Seo Joon’s 1st time assuming the role of a Chaebol, but it’s definitely one that you cannot help but applaud and shake head (at the same time) at his hilarious narcissistic behaviour.

He thinks he is a gift from heaven, being so intelligent, rich and handsome that he seems more like some superhuman existence.

There is this saying which goes “you need to love yourself before you can love another person”. For Young Joon’s case, he needs to learn how to allocate some of his precious self-love to the people around him. He only shows his gentler demeanour towards Mi So.

While he may be the most difficult boss, you would chuckle at how Mi So can just handle him so well, on many different levels, be it at work, personal or social events. You can see from his little actions like slowing down his strides so that Mi So can catch up and walk alongside him. It’s a manifestation of how he sees her as his equal half, evolving from their long-time superior-employee relationship.

Even when he really didn’t want Mi So to leave her job, he hoped that she would look for what truly makes her happy in life. He’s the overzealous boyfriend, who would freak out at the thought of Mi So adjusting neck tie for other men. He would take care of her when she was drunk but also angry that she did not control her limit.

Perhaps it’s due to age; such “far from reality” dramas are not as heart-gripping for me. I prefer “Fight for My Way” because it not only shows the cute interactions, but also how real the obstacles that the characters meet in life are.

Much as the “Park-Park” couple looking so compatible and cute together, Park Min Young seems to have the best chemistry with Ji Chang Wook in “Healer”. As for Park Seo Joon, he’s got such oozing chemistry with Kim Ji Won and Hwang Jung Eum, that Park Min Young pales in comparison.

Park Min Young’s acting is average but since it is a rom-com, you do see her giving some cute expressions such as an evil sneer. More often than not, you would see her with big, doe eyes looking lovingly or angrily at Young Joon. Both leads manage to act on a level of understanding that complements each other. It is very important to have a 好对手。

Mi So can consider publishing a book or giving a talk on “How to Handle your Boss cum Boyfriend”. It may seem that Young Joon had the upper hand at the beginning since he is her boss. However, when the relationship changed, you could see how Mi So had him twirling round her fingers.

Do not be fooled by her appearance. Mi So is the new age competent woman who doesn’t compromise if she is being treated badly and she will say NO even to her most difficult boss. It’s plausible Young Joon finds this alluring and challenging about her.

While Mi So can 察言观色 very well, she has seemingly overlooked the fact that it is not just Young Joon in a one-sided relationship. She has disregarded Young Joon’s feelings time and again while they were making wedding preparations. It is usually the ladies who lament that their other halves do not seem to bother much. In this drama, this role takes a reversal turn. It shows that it takes 2 hands to clap in a relationship.

Since prehistoric days, it is tough for men to ever fully understand women, especially so for a narcissistic chaebol like Young Joon.

He may be witty and can solve the most appalling or difficult business situation, but he lacks the basic understanding to women’s hearts. He never knew Mi So is allergic to pollen till his brother told him before their wedding.

That is something I couldn’t fathom. How could someone be dense till this extent?

It is rather confusing that Young Joon didn’t seem to realize he likes Mi So all along till she made known her decision to resign. Yet at the later part, he knew he has been in love with her since Day 1.

That’s where the story buildup is weak in terms of how the love line develops. From someone who knows close to nothing about the intricacies of human relationships, Young Joon made a 360 degree transformation to a Sensitive New Age Guy (SNAG).

Young Joon let his emotions took the better of him after hiding them for 9 years. We could understand how eager he wanted to announce their newfound relationship to everyone else. However from Mi So’s perspective, she has long considered all possible consequences of dating her superior (who’s a “Golden” bachelor). She needs to withstand all accusations thrown at her on how she managed to win Young Joon’s heart.

While rekindling memories of the childhood kidnap scene was an attempt to beef up their relationship, it may have taken a notch too far. Audience may be skewed towards thinking that the 2 of them are just holding on to a childhood promise, instead of genuinely falling for each other.

We could tell in the earlier episodes that the 2 of them do feel something for each other. Even when Sung Yeon was mistaken as the “Oppa” who saved Mi So back then, Mi So also made it clear to him that she was just being grateful and it isn’t love.

Here are my favourite top 3 kiss scenes:
1) Wardrobe Kiss
2) A First kiss attempt but to have Mi So pushed far, far away
3) When Young Joon started kissing Mi in his home, Director Park barged in to the “crime scene”

I find Secretary Yang’s way of confession so refreshing! Imagine writing your confession in black marker on a bottle of coke. The lady would not realise till she starts sipping coke. In no time, she would have gulped the entire coke to see what you have written. That was SWAG. She would be too overloaded with sweetness to even think about rejecting you.

My Favourite Relationship Goals Quotes:

1) “There’s nothing better than being honest” – Mi So
2) “I want to be in the kind of relationship where I feel the tiredness of my day getting washed off just by hugging you once, even if you don’t make my heart flutter” – Young Joon.
– Young Joon

Marriage is not just about making sky-high promises. It is about making and realising attainable lifelong promises. This is what we call “细水长流,平凡的幸福”.

There are 3 distinct office romances that we see in this drama. “The Underground Love”, “The Boyfriend who can’t wait to flaunt his beautiful girlfriend”, and one whereby it started from Loggerheads to Lovers.

It’s best to keep mum about your office romance, for it not just affects how people may perceive of you, but it would also affect your work performance and your “impartiality”. We are all human beings, and we do get carried away with our feelings.

It seems that societal perceptions about being successful = being rich and dressing well, have not changed. This is particularly so in a more conventional society like Korea. While we are sad that Chansung had only 1 set of “office suit”, we agree that sometimes we wish we have just that 1 set of “office uniform”, so we would not need to fret over what to wear the next day.

Never a day had Young Joon forgotten about that dreadful past, but he acted nonchalant and as if he had lost his memories, so that everyone could carry on with their lives. He did not wish to revive Mi So’s painful memories although this would mean she would not remember him. He was truly considerate and sensitive towards Mi So’s feelings. It seems he is in a more suffering state. He remembers all the hurt and pain, but also the love for her, yet he could tell no one.

We also love Kang Ki Young’s role as Director Park Yoo Sik, who’s Young Joon’s long-time friend but subordinate at the same time. Yoo Sik is more like his Life and Love adviser, who rendered much earnest and valuable help to Young Joon’s personal life.

One useful advice was when Mi So called Young Joon a “bulldozer”, he asked Young Joon to control his speed because “more haste, less speed” applies in all love relationships. It would be wise that he slows down since it will pressurise Mi So to try to catch up with him all the time. Over time, she would just get sick of even trying.

I probably had my expectations set a tad too high regarding the sibling rivalry between Sung Yeon and Young Joon. We can sense hatred, angst and resentment between the 2 of them. The situation worsened as Mi So came into the picture, with both brothers trying to pursue her. We thought the clichéd “Rich parents would oppose” scenes would appear, but luckily there was no soap drama in this aspect.

I thought Lee Tae Hwan’s break would come as the 2nd male lead in “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim”, but all I could ask was “what’s wrong with the script”?
They did not just waste such a good looking contender to Young Joon, but made him seem as if he’s a weak opponent right from the very beginning.

While I agree Lee Tae Hwan has quite a fair bit to learn in horning his acting skills, the character lacked all the attributes he could leverage on to alleviate his attractiveness. His saving grace was at the last episode when he finally 冰释前嫌 with Young Joon and said that “I’m sorry. At that time, I couldn’t let it be me.” Perhaps the scriptwriter didn’t want the storyline to be too 煽情, it is more of like 点到为止 even when Sung Yeong expressed his remorse and regret.

I also like the part where Young Joon spent a lot of effort crafting a proposal plan for Mi Soo.

A marriage proposal is not about copying what others do, but more of customising what is suitable for that individual. Just think intently on what is it that she wants and you would come up with something that’s unique for her.

While this drama is ideal for a light-hearted laugh after a tiring day (with many swoon-worthy elements), the storyline is pretty forgettable in my opinion.

Nonetheless, it is still worth watching once if you are a fan of Rom-Coms or any of the leads.Read More →

You can’t deny that our homegrown JJ Lin, has stirred up a local phenomenon.

This is probably the next best thing to watching NDP. In case you missed, it, there were fans waving our national flag!

A moment of pride and glory.

Thanks to the power of social media, with viral videos of him performing on “中国好声音”, belting to hits after hits, with his music re-arrangements and musical talent + vocals, camaraderie with his counterparts, it helps people to know more about him in just a few minutes.

虽然无法听见 JJ 演唱 Celine Dion 的经典名曲”All By Myself”, 但能听见他演唱 All-4-One的 “I swear”,也是喜出望外。

He’s a more confident and seasoned singer-songwriter now, who’s ready to take on bigger challenges, in leaving footprints around the world.

All the best to you conquering the world and fellow Singaporeans, Please continue to show your unwavering support to our homegrown singers!Read More →

Mission Impossible 6: Fallout, is undeniably the “Best of the Franchise” (they say), and Tom cruises on steadily. This is a total blown away, much more than a visual treat.

It’s so insanely heart palpitating, eyes popping & jaw drooping exciting that leaves you no chance for boredom throughout the intensely packed 2 hour 28 min movie, weaving through land, water and air with out-of-this-world action scenes.

Christopher McQuarrie & Tom Cruise lapped the MI series yet to another, higher level. The intensity built up scene after scene, left you gasping for more, yet it left you wondering if they could even take it further than the previous intense scene.

The scenes seemed so outrageously REAL that I had no doubt there were NO stunt doubles.

All death defying stunts were performed by the actors, especially Tom Cruise whom we have no doubt is a perfectionist, but he’s got this perfectionist streak with a suicidal instinct.

From doing a HALO jump from the plane 100 times just to perfect that scene, breaking his ankle while he was trying to jump across the building, the motorcycle chase scenes in Paris and London where he was weaving through the narrow streets, the helicopter chase scene and mountain scaling scenes in Kashmir, Cruise shows that he’s giving all that he’s got, not even holding back 1%.

You can’t help but to applaud his professionalism, perfectionism plus pure insanity as an actor, entertainer and stuntman.

Best known for his roles in “Top Gun”, “Interview with the Vampire” and definitely his role as Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible series, Tom Cruise has re-written the word “Impossible” to POSSIBLE. He would go to great lengths to bring such remarkable cinematic experience for the movie goers.

Bounds of possibilities and surprises await the audience, as they are in for a sumptuous movie treat. It’s been 2 decades since the 56-year old Tom Cruise took on the role of IMF Agent, Ethan Hunt, but it seems, he’s not gonna slow it down anytime soon.

Just how can anyone be still so alluringly charismatic at the age of 56?

Not many people in their 20s or 30s may be able to hold out such physical exhaustion, let alone someone in his mid 50s. His mental strength and perseverance is something we need to look up to.

Most would think that MI6 should act as the finale for Tom Cruise’s journey as Ethan Hunt after a long 22 years. For one, we couldn’t imagine how else they can break through the high standards set by MI6. BUT I’m sure we are all hoping that he will return with something bigger and better than this.

Because we can tell, he has no intention to call it quits yet.

And truly, only he could make all this possible.

Without such insane dedication and pride in his work, topped up with that perfectionist streak of suicidal instinct, he couldn’t have made such a great action movie.

I especially loved the helicopter chase scenes through the fluffy clouds & snowy mountains in Norway. It was absolutely breathtaking.

There was time for us to marvel at the awesome treats that Mother Nature brings us while keeping glued to our seats.

The hanging-by-a-thread mountain scaling attempts would probably leave your palms in cold sweat as you watched Ethan Hunt and August Walker fight it out.

It might be cliché, but all ladies love “bad boys”, to a certain extent. What greater pleasure is it than Henry Cavill, who’s better known as Superman, the Man of Steel as the villain in MI6. He holds such a big role that MI6 would be less interesting if he wasn’t cast. He adds so much spice, excitement and visual pleasure to the movie.

Be it fighting alongside Ethan Hunt in the “toilet fight” scene, the motorcycle chase scenes or fighting against Ethan Hunt in the “Helicopter” chase scene, August Walker captured much attention as the antagonist, who wanted to blow up the world with Lane.

Rebecca Ferguson, who reprises her role as the kick-ass, Ilsa Faust, does bring a more refreshing mood to the male-dominated movie. She’s a female lead who’s capable of not just saving her own ass, but also more than capable to save Ethan Hunt from harm.

There’s still a pretty much mysterious aura about her, where you would wonder if she was a friend or a foe in reality.

Vanessa Kirby’s role as the White Widow was alluring, with some slick action scenes and that “Poison Ivy” appeal, but she didn’t get to showcase much with limited screen time.

Compassion for his friends is his biggest weakness but while Ethan risks his life to save millions, he never loses sight of any individual/ team mates.
And only such a personality would be able to save mankind.

While most action movies would leave very little time for emotional scenes or love lines, we do get quite a bit of earnest acting from Tom.

The emotional trauma and turmoil he still has to go through after so many years of fighting and killing is illustrated so aptly; whereby he wakes from his nightmares with the complicated mix of fear, trauma, anxiety, guilt, remorse and feelings of loss, written so explicitly over his face.

The one woman who is always on his mind is his ex-wife, Julia Meade.

He was able to set himself free because of what Julia said. “I’m here where I should be, and so are you”.

It’s a realization that she is happy at where she should be, the same goes for Ethan.

You would definitely walk out of the cinema gushing over the adrenaline contentment and looking forward to the next sequel.

No one else can portray the role of Ethan Hunt better than Tom Cruise.

There’s a reason why he’s still one of the most popular actors in Hollywood.

We are already looking forward to MI7.Read More →

David Tao is a serious musician, but he’s definitely someone who knows how to bask in the moment, sharing love and laughter to all.

Uncle, Uncle!”

It was a lovely journey down memory lane with the vocal powerhouse and his greatest hits.

Read More →

If you were a 80s or 90s kid, your favourite dinosaur movie has got to be JURASSIC PARK. The one very distinctive scene that you would remember vividly, would be the one where you watch how that vibrating cup of water in the car instilled fear in the main characters, when the T-Rex was seeking them out.

We have never forgotten how Jurassic Park used to thrill us. Decades passed and we had the Jurassic World back in 2015.

It’s good to see Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallads Howard reprising their roles in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I was hoping to see a little more on their love line since they parted ways where Jurassic World ended. However, there wasn’t really much development.

They would brave dangers together once again in this seemingly “darker” theme “Fallen Kingdom”.

It was akin to a Kingdom, or a very majestic zoo/safari, back in the 1st part of this trilogy. Now, all we see are ruins and chaos as all the surviving dinosaurs fending for themselves on a deserted island.

This sequel is a little “darker” not just in its literal terms that the dinosaurs were jailed in dungeons, how the park looks like after being abandoned and how the dinosaurs had to die or to be sold before the volcano erupt, but also how it made you feel.

Most importantly, it’s about the co-existence between human beings and dinosaurs.

Humans seem to be the “monsters” as compared to these once-extinct creatures, with their evil agendas.

– Was it the fault of these natural predators that such irreversible impact was caused?
– Or the mankind who tried to revive them, by cloning them and genetically altering them?
– Now that they have caused harm to mankind, should we leave them to die or have them protected in a sanctuary?
– Is there a way to co-exist or the best way is for human beings to just leave them alone?
– Who are the real “monsters”?

These are some questions that the director, script writers might wish you would ponder about.

It’s sad to see these magnificent and majestic creatures that roam the earth way before mankind, to be locked up in cages, shackled, wounded, removed of their teeth, etc, just like endangered animals that poachers hunt down.

Nonetheless, the attempt to move things out of the theme park and now you see dinosaurs ramping in the dungeons and corridors of Lockwood’s castle-like home, is a daring move and good effort, though the attempt had somewhat caused a little downside for this movie.

You can’t but help applaud Bayona for instilling the fear factor and super intense moments of suspense and horror at the same time. You probably would recall the breath-taking moments when Indoraptor was tapping its claw, which seeking out the hiding of its victims.

The more heart-warming treat of this deal is, the special bond between Owen and “Blue”. Blue is a velociraptor which would tear her prey up, except that she recognises Owen, her trainer and would save him in times of danger and protect him.

It reminds us of the bonding that most pet owners would have with their pets. They would turn ferocious to protect their masters but would be like a little “kid” when they wanted to seek some affection. If a cold-dinosaur could be more empathetic and feeling than human beings, what does it make us out to be?

Even in the world of dinosaurs, there is segregation by “classes” – those that are worth more would be saved, while the rest would be left to die on their own.
Isn’t it so apt to this term that we always hear about “Survival of the Fittest”?

This pretty much resonates with how animal poachers kill or sell endangered animals for their body parts that are consistently in pretty high demand in a “black market”.

Here, we are talking about “ Dinosaurs Trafficking”. You would be an instant millionaire, if not, Billionaire.

Was it out of human greed, monetary gains, fame, or the fact that mankind wishes to revive a group of creatures that existed long before our time?

The world of dinosaurs may just be far-fetched fantasy, but what the director and scriptwriters are trying to send across to us, is way more in-depth.

Are audience prepared to be set thinking about the deeper implications that such acts would ensue, or are they more likely to engage in a visually enjoyable and intense “dinosaur” chasing movie?

This 2nd part of the trilogy, already sets its pave to what might come in the 3rd franchise.

There was much direction thrown towards the moral implications of genetic cloning.

It sets you thinking, though mankind is responsible for cloning them, does it give you a right to take away their lives?

It seems that the fools of this movie, is still mankind afterall.

Human beings are intelligent enough to bring these extinct dinosaurs back to life, harness their potential due to their greed, yet is still nothing but a helpless prey when left face to face with the dinosaurs.

While there are several issues that may set you thinking, the generic fear factor that we have for these majestic creatures are still instilled with us, in all the very intense, terrifying and seat-gripping, heart-pounding scenes, something just seems to be lacking in a manner.

Perhaps, we can have lesser of the sinister “agenda” behind all these genetic engineering, but to have a more functional way that we all enjoy of the “Jurassic Park” instalments that we used to love.

It’s good to move with the times, and also try to take a twist away from the functional state of such movies, but it probably needs to consider more about how to keep the audience leaving the cinema, with some very iconic or heartfelt scenes, that we would remember, for a longer time.

If you always have been a Jurassic series fan, yes of course, you should watch this. If you aren’t but are gamed for some excitement, it is still thrilling in its ways, just don’t keep up too many hopes on it bringing you many out of the extra-ordinary moments.Read More →
