一口气在4个晚上内就把这部剧集看完了,而且还感到蛮意游未尽的。 可见我有多么喜欢这部剧集吧?  Its genre is very different from most Korean Dramas & that is why it’s got a special allure of its own.

We have watched many lovey-dovey romance comedy dramas, at its best with many handsome hunks and pretty babes, or tear jerking melodramas.

Adding horror to the pot of “rojak” mix, gives this drama a refreshing twist.

Unlike most “peak hour” dramas, The Master’s Sun has an interesting horror genre, with funny, heart-thumping, sad, yet touching elements. Each episode comprises of a “moral of the story”, with regards to the respective “ghosts” featured.

I watched “The Master’s Sun” mainly for So Ji Sub as this is his 1st romantic comedy. He has starred in melodramas for far too long and this is really a very successful and well-received switch to a livelier character. I’d never thought that Ji Sub oppa could make people literally laugh in his dramas.

This is also the 1st time I feel, that he just looks so suave in his drama! He lost a lot of weight for the show and has such nice, chiselled jawline, plus very nice outfits.

Oh, I bought this necklace too!

Your heart cringe if he tears but you will roar into laughter if you see him trying to act AEGYO, and yet you would still find him cute when he asks people to “Get Lost”.

I feel that he should take on more of such roles, to make him look less solemn and more approachable. It would help to draw the audience nearer to him.

So Ji Sub’s chemistry with Gong Hyo Jin was just so on point. She’s probably the 1st female lead who has the ability to bring out and tap on So Ji Sub’s inert potential for romantic comedy. Their camaraderie made the drama so fun and enjoyable to watch, that it was typically so hard for me to click the “stop” button.

He proved his versatility as a stingy & mercenary CEO, Joo Jonog Won, yet he is like such a “shelter” oppa to Tae Gong Shi. His scarred past has made him close his heart to people but he slowly opens up to the every so positive Gong Shi, who is like a “sun” melting iceberg.

The Master’s Sun, 又名 主君的太阳,是一部, Horror-Romantic-Comedy… 对 于韩国电视剧来说,是少有的。 我不会称它为偶像剧因为 So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin 不是属于典型的帅哥美女型。他们俩都是演技派

就因为他们的演技很淳厚,依旧能让你感到无比的甜蜜。两人的互动也出奇的好。So Ji Sub 是个出了名的 Man of Few Words & most people would feel that he is cold. However, like how his co-star described him, he is cold but very warm at the same time.

It’s hard to tell what he is thinking from his poker face look, but he does have this ability to 搞笑 without 笑场。He’s the kind of 冷面笑匠.

Well back to the story, sometimes it is not what you can see that is the scariest.

The scariest are those that you can see, but you never know what they would do or think behind your back.

It is important that we need to seek a closure for our hearts (pertaining to some chapters in our lives), not for anyone else, but for ourselves to be able to move on.

So who’s the Master?

I have been wondering why the title “The Master’s Sun”.

My analogy is, Joo Joong Won is the CEO of a shopping mall called “Kingdom”. It is natural that people would address him as “Master”. Gong Hyo Jin’s name in the show is “Tae Gong Shi” aka nickname “Tae Yang”, which means the sun.

When you put both names together, you can form some linkage there.

When a domineering CEO (Master) is being put together with someone who has such a bright and sunshine personality like Gong Shi (Tae Yang aka Sun), there’s bound to be plenty of sparks and chemistry, since both are very strong and stubborn.

Tae Gong Shi used to be a bright and sunny lady. However, after an accident, she had the ability to see ghosts and she has been tormented by it as she would go around helping those with grievances or those who still have wishes unfulfilled.

Most people would think that she is a lunatic, but can imagine how tired she must have been without all the peaceful sleep.

They were linked together because she could see Joong Woon’s ex gf who died while they were both kidnapped during their teenage years. He wanted to find out certain things from Gong Shi so that he could have a closure.

He couldn’t walk out of that tragedy though he seemed to be living well now. This somehow kick starts the entire story when they met one day while she tried to hitch a ride from him on a rainy night in the wilderness.

It’s a love rectangle that we are talking about here.

Kang Woo (Seo In Guk) is the security head in the company, who has a torch for Gong Shi. Seo In Guk’s acting is still a little stiff since he is a newbie but it was still sufficient to bring out Kang Woo’s character.

Yi Rung (Kim Yoo Ri), who is a popular actress is known as “Little Tae Yang”. She used to be Gong Shi’s classmate but was forever treated as “Number 2” and she had always been jealous of Gong Shi. So, there’s also this interesting rivalry from Little Tae Yang here.

I think her acting is good. She’s a very pretty lady with big eyes and also acted in Cheongdam-dong Alice previously. She may seem very high and mighty and full of self confidence, but she always has this inferiority complex when it comes to facing Gong Shi. She almost “sold” her soul when she listened to all the what-nots from a ghost that feeds on human’s inferiority complex.

Kang Woo and Yi Rung make a rather funny pair as well.

As for the horror element – There would be MANY ghosts popping out from nowhere in the 1st few episodes. Some really have scary looking faces, the typical rotten and bloody faced ghosts that you would see in Korean movies.

After 5 episodes or so, you would get used to this and it is not that gruesome for the timid ones. You can watch this during daytime.

I just kept laughing nonstop at times, as they are just too comical in their interactions and their expressions were kinda epic.

Nonetheless, I actually cried during Espidoe 2. I just found that story a little sad. It’s interesting to watch how Gong Shi tries to resolve issues for all those ghosts who approached her for help.

There are many obstacles between Joong Won and Gong Shi, but what is sweet is how they slowly change their relationship as time goes by. She will cling to him whenever she sees ghosts because the ghosts will disappear when she touches him.

I leave it to your imagination to all the hilarious and funny scenes that would follow.

Over time, he began to become less “cold”. He would appear whenever she needs him unconsciously. He started doing things that he would NEVER have done previously, such as donating to charities or helping others out. He’s someone who only does things to benefit himself, after calculating each item’s or person’s worth.

There’s always a price tagged to everything, according to Joong Won.

When 2 opposite poles are being put together, it’s very interesting to see how the sparks will ignite. One is so cold, one is so warm and there comes a time when you will be influenced by each other and reach the median.

He did not believe in ghosts it ended up that he dared to talk to the “air” and all, which was really funny.

You just gotta watch it for yourself to really feel the impact. Ji Sub oppa did quite a bit of homework and designed some gestures for his character, the most famous being the “Gor Jor” (Get Lost) handsign. Every little expression from that poker face, indicates a different level of what he is feeling.

Gong Hyo Jin performed very well in the drama. She could behave like a lunatic talking to the air or looking v distraught and tormented by her insomnia.

She has been acting for many years but you will not label her as those pretty vases who cannot act. She may be more of a plain jane but she can just bring out her characters fully. Her acting is just so natural, that it did not even feel like she’s acting.

Whenever I finish watching a drama, I will feel that sense of emptiness and have withdrawal symptoms for a week or so.

Well, it indeed is a very good feeling to watch So Ji Sub’s drama again.

It’s very hard not to like him. He just gets more charismatic as an actor as he ages. His roles are always the no nonsense ones. By opening up a little here, I think it is a good start.

He was afraid what kind of response the audience would give, but it turned out that this drama is very, very well-received.

I’m sure he could do better, and who knows he may just let loose totally for one real comedy some day? He’s still a little reserved here but as a CEO, I guess you cannot go overboard. It’s a good try. He seems to be getting the hang of it.

Hopefully, he, Jo In Sung & Ha Ji Won would have a chance to collaborate again. I would love to see them pit their acting skills again!

I hope I get to meet him in person someday, but chances for fan meets in Singapore may not be that high as the fanbase here is more skewed towards singing groups or young idol actors.

If you want a good laugh, yet want to scare yourself a little, plus some good script, you should really watch “The Master’s Sun”.

“The Master’s Sun” is bound to bring you on an emotional roller coaster ride while braving through some scary scenes, yet you would just hang on to it till the very end.

Yes of course, I’m absolutely looking forward to So Ji Sub’s next drama!
